This is the scariest thing I've read since 1984.

I wish I read this first, but it’s definitely the better of the two and it doesn’t feel like it’s too long compared to The Every. That one felt like the story dragged along, but this one had great timing, so it was more enjoyable. The characters aren’t the most likable though, so there’s that. Just a story that actually feels like where we are heading. Maybe.

Interesting and modern ideas are brought up in the Circle, but the book is unfortunately drowned in mundane details and a terribly unlikable main character.

Favorite Quotes:
“We are not meant to know everything, Mae. Did you ever think that perhaps our minds are delicately calibrated between the known and the unknown? That our souls need the mysteries of night and the clarity of day? Young people are creating ever-present daylight, and I think it will burn us all alive. There will be no time to reflect, to sleep to cool.”

“First of all, I know it’s all people like you. And that’s what’s so scary. Individuallyyou don’t know what you’re doing collectively.”

“Under the guise of having every voice heard, you create mob rule, a filterless society where secrets are crimes.”

“A circle is the strongest shape in the universe. Nothing can beat it, nothing can improve upon it, nothing can be more perfect.”

“Mae, so many of the things I invented I honestly did for fun, out of some perverse game of whether or not they'd work, whether people would use them. I mean, it was like setting up a guillotine in the public square. You don't expect a thousand people to line up to put their heads in it”

3.5/5- I was pretty impressed with how old this book is and the topics that were covered. It was definitely a made-you-think book. Some of the writing felt scattered or incomplete. It also felt like it was written for a younger audience. If I read this as a teenager in 2013, it would have been 5/5. I didn’t hate the ending either.

Black Mirror vibes - so creepy, but so believable.

I think it would be great to study this book in high school english - good exploration of the negative (and some positive) ways social media and the internet can have on us.

I wish I'd read this in 2013 when it came out because with technology moving so fast in the last 10 years or so, I'm unsure if this is a prediction of our future, if it's already happened or if it's ridiculous. to think this could happen in real life.

I loved it and I hated it. I laughed out loud and shook my fist to the sky. I wanted to hug it and also throw it across the room. The characters are shallow, the plot is implausible and yet I want to discuss this book all of the time with everyone. It took me awhile to get past that this book is not Zeitoun or A Staggering. . . but that doesn't mean that The Circle doesn't have its own merits. It's all about modifying expectations. ANYWAY, I'm glad that I read this book and would definitely recommend that you read it with others so that you can have someone to discuss with later. Because "sharing is caring." Muahahahaha.
