this book reminds me a LOT of the god of small things - i absolutely adore books like this, weird literary things with enough themes to fill up an entire notebook with notes. but in the nature of it being similar to god of small things to me, i dont really think i can give it a 5 star rating until i read it twice. i listened to it this time around, and because of that i feel like there are bits of it i didnt understsnd or pick up because i straight up wasnt paying attention, so i need to read it again
basically this book is a beautiful commentRy on the patriarchy, societal expectations, mental health and human violence that i love but cant give 5 stars because i need to read it again to appreciate it

It isn't easy to review this book. I don't know what I was expecting, but I didn't expect anything like what I just read.
The Vegetarian has three parts, each told from a different point of view, but what is interesting is that none of the parts is told by the main character. This book is about a woman who one day decides to become a vegetarian after having a dream. This causes so many problems within the family, but the situation gets out of control. The book is not about being a vegetarian. It's much more profound in that being a vegetarian is a symbol of independence in a patriarchal society. I wasn't sure how I felt about the book until the third part, where everything became a bit clearer. In that sense, I am glad I didn't give it up. This book made me feel uncomfortable though, and I don't think the story has a clear conclusion. I didn't hate this book, but it is very difficult to articulate my feelings. I can't remember ever feeling this way after reading a book.

Strange in a different way than I was expecting. There was certainly a lot of symbolism, and the writing was well-crafted and beautiful at times. However I found the overall story kind of boring and the last chapter difficult to understand. I think the book was marketed (at least to me) poorly. It is not terrifying or unsettling, and only the first chapter really addresses the dreams that inspired the protagonists vegetarianism. It was fine, and I finished it one day but not my favorite.

I know everyone loves this book but I really didn't. Maybe the problem is that I don't like being unsettled and this is very unsettling. Technically a very good book but I couldn't connect to it.

Occassionally one come across a book that is purely well written. The writing itself gives pleasure.
This story is disturbing, weird and does not follow any traditional narrative arch so to speak. The writing however is very fine. It is like examining a piece of pottery from long ago, one can only imagine the full pot, but that does not mean that the fragment one has is not beautiful in and of itself.
A short book, but not a seamless read.
