I'd say this is the best so far of the three Emily McIntire fairytale retellings that I've read. Here, the woman is the dark part of the 'dark romance', and she kinda lives up to it. The Wicked Witch of the West is the daughter of a drug dealer and the one cooking them up. She's dedicated to her family and what she does, but she is also a little eager to kill people. It's nice to see a villain where what makes them evil isn't their sexist attitude towards women, and it's a shame that it's only because the villain is a woman. I can say this because the 'good' guy that falls in love with her says the same shit that the men in the other novels do. The tin man from the Wizard of Oz is a DEA agent going undercover to find the source of the really powerful drugs in the area and happens to fall in love with the mind behind it. He's a player before he meets her, and then all the misogynistic shit he says is magically gone because he loves her. Kinda fed up with that trope.

There is no redeeming qualities when it comes to Evie in my mind, that woman is off her rocker. I did like Nick, though, which made it more complicated. Also the spice hit well.

Dark Romance, Enemies to Lovers, 3 3/4 🔥

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the female being the “bad guy,” but it was done so well. She was still portrayed in a way that made her sympathetic in a dark way of course. Spice was also top notch.

I liked that the lady main character had the morally gray traits! Also the wizard of oz/wicked references were amazing. Always makes me smile. I didn’t love the Mr. Main character I didn’t find him to be particularly interesting but I don’t think that was the intent. The focus is more on other characters growth and drive.

I have read previous books by this author and really loved them, I really enjoyed Hooked due to the ability to take an already made, widely known and loved story and make it your own which is what lead me to read this. However, this book had no real connection to The Wizard of Oz apart from some of the characters names, it's a kind of Mafia x FBI Agent love story whereas i was kind of expecting at least a little fantasy. The book was OK which is the reason for 3 stars but not something I would really recommend. I felt the characters were a bit bland, there was no build up in relationship so even as a love story it was fairly disappointing. The ending was a little flat so if you are to read this then I would definitely recommend reading the epilogue you can find online or in the physical book (I read it on the kindle).
