As the third in the series, I expected a lot of the plot and the twists but still thoroughly enjoyed the book. There’s a lot of dark themes throughout the book and the sex scenes are explicit

If it wasn’t for the smut, it wouldn’t be worth reading. While an interesting idea, the fractured (more like shattered) telling of the Wizard of Oz could use some character development.
I appreciated the idea of the female m/c being the true villain, however the entire book is predictable and nothing new.

CW gun violence, death of a sibling, addiction, drugs

Tropes: Enemies to lovers, hidden identity, Irish mafia

Our heroine, Eveline, is a drug manufacturer for her dad's heroin enterprise. Our hero, Nick, is an undercover federal agent, looking to weed out Eveline.

This thrusts the two into a forced proximity, enemies to lovers situation, which all follows after a one night stand.

The standout for me in this book was Eveline herself, as much as everyone loves a morally grey hero, there's something about a morally grey heroine that just hits different. We come to expect the good girl, then a heroine like Eveline comes along who is ruthless, violent, and on the outside appears to be hardened to everyone and everything.

However, as it often happens, we see cracks in her facade which has been built up due to grief and mistreatment, and the softness underneath starts to shine through as she begins to fall in love with our hero. A fully fleshed out character, you can see how she struggles with her grief and the darker parts of herself, but while we have this dark and dangerous woman, she's also a poet, who seems to crave a true attachment and someone in her life who is going to be a constant without the risk of betrayal or feeling unloved/unwanted.

Nick, honestly, I wasn't head over heels in love with. I believe this is simply due to personal preference, where I go for either the super sweet cinnamon roll OR the morally grey villain, Nick sort of fell directly in between the two. Not overly sweet, and not overly dark. I can't emphasize this enough that it's just personal preference and no slight against how the character was written. He had layers, he had angst in dealing with the chinks in his moral armour where he ends up falling for the bad guy he's supposed to hate and bring down.

Romance-wise, I felt like the love story was quite fast paced, and I didn't really see the romantic aspect of their relationship build the way the first two books in the series did, even though their chemistry was wild and you could really feel how consumed they were with one another physically. Intimacy-wise, this was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 A dominant female character is always 😘👌, and we had some edge play in there as well.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. The only thing that didn't leave me fully satisfied was I felt that the last 10% escalated and peaked so quickly, so it felt really abrupt. Without giving any spoilers, there was something I anticipated was going to happen and I was really looking forward to it being dark and drawn out, but it was done quite quickly and I didn't get to feel that sick sense of satisfaction seeing someone get the comeuppance they deserved. But like I said previously, it's simply personal preference.

Thank you so much to Emily for this ARC ❤️
