solid romance with a very happy ending, but the relationships were adorable (friendship + romance)
feminism also added some extra layers that interested me and I definitely like how many aspects of microagressions or unintentional misogyny were uncovered

This book was good. It tackled lots of different issues surrounding feminism, immigration, racism and approached them by demonstrating small microaggressions and actions against the characters in order to covey the themes of the book. The plot was relatively interesting and the story was engaging enough to keep me interested. However, there were some things I’d like to nitpick. For example, how quickly news travels around their school & the rumour issues. Also, after the manifesto publisher was revealed I would’ve liked there to be more angst. It was a betrayal that Eliza hadn’t seen coming and they made up a couple pages later. Furthermore, I felt pretty bad for her because the entire school was always watching her which, as a student, I don’t think is entirely accurate. I think the book has a younger target audience and seems a bit muddled so I didn’t give it 5 stars.

It took me a while to get into this book (but I am a 62 year old white male), but eventually it took hold. I grew up in OC and was there when the Vietnamese refugees first arrived during at the close of the Vietnam War, and have watched the Asian assimilation since. I like the variety of cultures there, and it was refreshing to read a book from an Asian character’s viewpoint. I also liked how the characters were ‘fleshed out’, not just 2-dimensional facades. They were intelligent, well expressed and interesting, not “valley girls”. It was nice to see (young) women taking charge and characters doing “the right thing” regardless of sex or sexual orientation.
