Dragged a little and though I understood why it was necessary, there was so much information and backstory before we actually got to learn anything about how Wonder Woman was created

If you are looking for just a quick background of Wonder Woman as a character, then you will be disappointed with this book. However, if you are interested into the entire mindset, the times in which Wonder Woman was created from her creator, William Moulton Marston, then you are in for a huge lesson in history and the history of feminism.
Marston lived the interesting life, as he had studied law in Harvard, but also had a better interest in the early studies of psychology, while also inventing the first lie detector test. But as the author often reminds the reader his life is only part of the story. The history of feminism and the suffragists tell their stories in waves through the lives of Marston’s wife Sadie Elizabeth Holloway, partner and mistress Olive Byrne, and Olive’s aunt Margaret Sanger and how they had slowly influenced the creation and shaping of Wonder Woman.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was an interesting read of the different histories all of these woman who had influenced in the making of Wonder Woman and seeing the different mindset of Marston. The book was sexy, badassy, and women had power. It’s Wonder Woman

Sought out this audiobook after many watches of the movie Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. I knew that was a fictionalized story crafted for film but it was certainly intriguing to hear the fact side through this book for comparison. It does read more as a biography of William M Marston, with a cleverly crafted title in order to draw more readers in. Still interesting to hear about the family dynamics, Wonder Woman journey, and ties to the feminist movement of the time though.
Fascinating connections between psychology, feminism, and popular culture.
Wonder Woman is widely recognized as a feminist icon, but the details are so telling... personal and familial secrets prevented a broader understanding of the inter-connected-ness of the early 20th century feminist movers and shakers. It's appropriate that I finished this book on the anniversary of the 19th Amendment; the history of the women's political actions are largely secreted away in the folds of history.
Jill Lepore's research is to be applauded - both for uncovering the true tale of Wonder Woman's origin and for sharing a difficult story well. Lepore's insights credit her understanding of the larger context that framed the pro-woman movement in the last century. More books should be written on this subject.

Utterly fascinating. Listened to audio book; great production. Lepore reads her own book, and not many academics are engaging, dramatically capable (in the sense that she can emote while she reads-in other words, perform) narrators. Well done. But don't miss out on the printed book. It has Marsten and Sanger family pictures and reproductions of Wonder Woman comics.
A in detail look at the creator of Wonder Woman and the events that lead to the creation of such a historic comic book heroine. Each page was full of fascinating facts about the odd life of Marston and all the women that surrounded and influenced him. I learned so much more about the character Wonder Woman and how originally she was far more than a pair of short star-patterned shorts and a heaving bosom. This is a story of the power of women and men who saw the benefit in giving women the rights to their own decisions, opinions, bodies, and life. This book is full of laughs, tears and surprise. I would recommend this book to anyone no matter if you have read comics or not. This is a book about an interesting man and the women who influenced him to create a super heroine who to this day is fighting alongside the most famous (male) characters in history.
informative
slow-paced
Superbly written and utterly fascinating, hell of a story.
I found myself wondering when would be ever really get to Wonder Woman...
Besides that I did find the lives that had originally shaped Wonder Woman interesting while also disappointing. Maybe I should have read a few more reviews before starting, so that way I would be prepared for it. I've never read a Wonder Woman comic and this really didn't make me want to. It made it seem like compared to other comics the stories would be shallow. This was a rich history of the people who influenced the production of Wonder Woman most, but of Mr. Marston I found him shallow and not a good sort of person.
