Reread of 2024: I didn’t think I could love these books any more and I was wrong. These characters have my whole heart

this book was an excellent debut novel for this author. I will say it was slow at times and i found my self skimming over some of the details with the world building but after reading the sequel, this book was essential to set the tone for the second book.

i love her relationship with tolek and how that has started to develop. i understood her pain and not wanting to give up on malakai but i was mad annoyed when she was angry with him after learning the truth. like the man sacrificed himself for her. he did what he thought was right to save her and his people. girl then didnt tell her family and broke the law to go save him… like she wasnt lying to her family about that.
slow-paced

It was okay? But if you’re gonna do the alcoholism plot really do it.

”Until the stars stop shining,”

this was very well written and you could tell the author put effort into it, but story wise it was a bit boring.

Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I'm a bit torn with this review. In general, I liked the story, but I didn't like the pace, it felt too slow and dragged out. I enjoyed the author's writing style, the story flowed nicely. Still, something was missing and in my case, it all came down to a slower pace.

I will continue reading the series and hopefully will enjoy book 2 more :)
