It took me two attempts to read The Curse of Ophelia, and I am actually very glad I picked it up a second time.
The start of the book is slow, cringe-dramatic, and riddled with clichés. Magenta eyes, blue and white horse named Sapphire, and "I was made for swords, not skirts"? Definitely seemed like a self-indulgent lovingly written fan-fiction-esque story, which I can respect, but not really my thing. I put it down, swearing to my friend who enjoyed this series I would come back to it.
When I did, I was in for a treat--I swear, I just made the unfortunate misstep of stopping too soon--because this book has a lot more to offer. Once the book began further discussing Ophelia's flaws, she became infinitely more interesting. Then, when they introduced her inner circle of friends and the conflicting personalities between them, I was even more enthralled. The characters are dynamic and all have their own motivations at play which makes things really interesting.
The twist didn't really catch me off guard, but I didn't care. I wanted to know more more more about whatever the hell was going on with all of the characters! They all are such terrible, lovable disasters plopped into a dramatic fantasy novel. The characterizations and how they interact with the plot made it a joy to read--more than I initially imagined. I already find myself wanting to read the next one in the series. Great read for those who love fantasy stories with strong, disaster human female MCs, some kick-ass action, and some juicy relationship drama.

When the recommendation for a series is "it'll rip your heart out & stomp on it" I will immediately pick the book up. This was a solid first book of a series. The world building is superb and I was immediately engrossed in the story & deeply invested in the lives & well being of Ophelia & Co. I cannot wait to continue this journey & watch them all come into their own powers.
