I would say, Franzenesque, if that's not insulting. Lots of truly great characters, and it tells you so much about history, people, and weird cultural things. The structure is intricate (but... relaxed? Like, very much not trying to be a thriller even when it seems like it might go off in that direction) and the writing at the word and sentence level is crackling and in places quite virtuosic, again without showing off.
