This is one of very few books where I knew I would love all of it before I'd finished the first page. She has a unique voice, an eye for poignant detail, and a talent for weaving multiple story lines together in a way that doesn't let you forget your attachment to one while leaning into another's. Nothing short of brilliant.

This book contained some really thrilling and sentimentally charged stuff about the relationships between genealogy, culture, imperialism, and race, and how that stuff sits at the intersections of cultural production and religious persecution. I really really like how all the pieces fit together, and I really like how FUNNY this can be and how slapstick the ending tends to get. It turns into a straight farce at the very end and I honestly LOVE that, it's probably my favorite thing.
There are only two characters I enjoy reading about: Irie and Milat. Everyone else is INSUFFERABLE--and I get it! I find them compelling even if they INFURIATE me, and I have empathy for the material conditions that lead to their various breakdowns and losses born of stubborn pigheadedness. But I just can't. You know? I just can't with the lot of them. And in a lot of ways that's probably a good thing--you should read characters that annoy you because it gives you an opportunity to examine your proclivities.

So far so good. Reminds me a bit of Nick Hornby for no good reason.
Finally finished. Quite a good read. Interesting and varied characters well drawn. Interesting story. Her writing style still reminds me of Nick Hornby although slightly heavier subject matter. But overall an enjoyable read.
