The grisly murders of two prostitutes draw Dr Tony Hill & DCI Carol Jordan back to Bradfield. The murders are exactly the same as a series of killings from two years ago, but the man found responsible for those is in a secure psychiatric hospital & he hasn't spoken to anyone, even his doctors, in all that time. Is this a copycat or was Derek Tyler wrongly convicted? When an undercover sting operation goes wrong, one of the team, DC Paula McIntyre, is kidnapped by the killer & Jordan, still recovering from her own ordeal, knows that time is running out to find her.

Another book in the series where the crimes have the reader wincing at the graphic descriptions, & these killings are particularly nasty. There's another case involving missing young boys but it's kept very much secondary & it left me feeling shortchanged - I would have liked a bit more closure. This is an issue with Carol & Tony's relationship too as it's two steps forward, three steps back. You can only draw things out for so long before it becomes tedious so here's hoping the next book sees them finally make some progress.
