A. loved it ("can I give it a hundred stars?"), but I thought it was plodding and uninspired.

Skylark by Patricia MacLachlan – Anna’s voice as a narrator really shines in this coming of age novel! Happy Reading!
Still cute, but not nearly as endearing or as touching as the first book. It's hard to pin down why, but I think maybe the fragility of the relationships with Sarah in the first story were a large part of its charm. Skylark tries to incorporate the same feeling, but I didn't buy it in this situation.

The sequel to Sarah, Plain and Tall, has a surprising amount of emotional depth, and, much like Sarah's reference to Jacob's letters, contains a lot written between the lines.
After Sarah moves west to marry Jacob, a drought brings hardships to the prairie community, and their marriage faces its first true test.
Told from the point of view of their daughter, Anna, this was a very realistic depiction of how circumstances can put strain on a relationship even when neither partner is doing anything wrong.
The introduction of Sarah's three aunts in Maine is a delightful addition to the cast, and the final resolution is hopeful and affirming. This book completely exceeded expectations for me.

Good quick reads. But that’s about it! Not much else to report!
Disappointment. Choppy, not as well developed, a large portion devoted to the difficulties of drought on the prairie, and not much happening in Maine. I had been looking forward to the Maine portion, but eh, Anna and Caleb were pretty down about missing home, which is understandable.
2 stars from me and the 10yo, 1 star from the 8yo. No opinion from the 5yo.

Beautiful and simple. I read this to my 7 year old boy and we both enjoyed it very much.
