Lovely book! Kids absolutely loved it, and they always ask for it. One of my favorites to read to them with a fantastic message

Read this for the BookRiot 2020 challenge prompt, “a picture book about a human character from a marginalized community.” Lupita is wonderful and this beautiful book made me tear up by the end. A must-read for all children (and probably some adults too).

I loved how this book touched on the topics of colorism. Growing up in the black community and in modern society it’s always been ingrained in you that the lighter your skin the more beautiful you are. The character of Sulwe is faced with this on a daily basis because she doesn’t look like anyone in her family and is always been called negative traits compared to her sister who is seen as the more beautiful one. First of the story and the way it was told was beautiful but my favorite part was the illustrations. This book is the most beautiful children’s book I have ever seen in my life. There was definitely times throughout the story where I had to stop reading to prevent myself from crying. I highly recommend that every person no matter the the color of your skin pick up this book. It teaches a valuable lesson that everyone should know....you’re beautiful no matter what the color of your skin is, beauty comes from within.

This is another one of those children's stories with a deep meaningful message, and I love those. I also think the artwork is amazing. This was a beautiful story I think every child would love.

Aww this is so beautiful! I’ve wanted to pick it up since it came out and I finally got my hands on it. Gorgeous illustrations by Vashti Harrison and a lovely story too.

Beautifully rendered story of a little girl learning that what she hates about herself is actually what makes her special.
