This would've been a four star but
(1) there was way too much time spent on the set up for the magical world
(2) does everything have to be a series?

The premise was great but the actual story felt clunky. It fell victim to, what is often, second book syndrome. It spent too much time setting up the future and not enough time on the single compelling story that pushes you to pick up the next book.

Adjacent to an impressive novel. It felt like a parody at times, at other times very surface-level. The dialogue, especially from the gay men, was so cringey.

Update: I just re-read this book to prepare for book 3's release and it was just as good as the first time.

This book was a bit of a slow burner. Nora Roberts took her time setting up the story, giving you the reader a slower pace than you are used to if you are a fan of hers. That being said it was excellent. I loved the pace, the lingering of family time, the heroine insisting she needs to find herself first, the root of the story, and how its sprouts and grows as you go on. If I have one complaint it's that Keegan and Breen don't get enough sexy time, but that's a me preference and not the story's way. I know and understand that for this book that was not the right path. I am so excited for the second and third installments, I have a feeling this series will become a favorite once it's all done.
