One of my reading goals for this year was to get more into poetry, specifically Indigenous poetry bc of course we all know what I enjoy reading, and this was a great start for me.

Vermette’s imagery of the river is so incredibly powerful in this book. Especially considering the significance of water, I really loved how prominent the river was and is.

The book begins with a quote about how poetry without politics is useless and narcissistic. Honestly, I have to agree. I think this book does such an incredible job at politicizing every aspect of Indigenous life. Love is political. Nature is political. Family is political. Indigenous life has been politicized to such a degree that nothing we do is simply a benign act. Everything we do has a political impact. And Vermette does a great job at illustrating this. Her romantic relationship is not simply fluff and love, it is an act of resistance. Love is resistance. Being on her homeland is resistance. Being by the river is resistance.

Anyways this is a great book, if you’re looking for some poetry this year, definitely check it out.

I enjoyed this collection of poetry that was a powerful punch with also a focus on grounding and taking care of one's self. When I had first read this collection, I did not feel as much from it as I did this time around as I didn't worry about if I was getting it right, and focused on how it made me feel.

I don't usually rate poetry, but this collection was too beautiful not to. Every one of Vermette's poems is raw and powerful and gorgeously written... I definitely want to read some of her other work, especially her prose.

So many emotions in this tiny little book of poems. Loved many of the poems and noted them in my journal. I hope to own this one day!
