The Music Shop

Although I really didn't enjoy her book about the wandering senior very much at all, I really liked this book. As a life long music lover, and especially of little out of the way music shops such as the one portrayed here, I was drawn to this book from the synopsis. Frank, the main character has a gift in which he knows just the music someone needs, and it's wonderful to have a soundtrack to this book, as I played the music he referred to in the chapters and it added a whole other depth to this story. Recommend.

I liked the mix of characters and all the talk about music.

I love it when a book has a playlist.

Lovely story but I lament the wasted time.....

As a professional musician, I always enjoy a book with a musical setting, but I got so much more with this one. Frank doesn't sing or play or even read music, but he is an expert listener. His ability to see people and know what people need to hear is like magic. When he meets Ilsa Brauchmann and she is a vast mystery to him, he doesn't know what to do. Watching Frank try to reach this woman with the power of music, then subsequently falling in love with her, was entrancing, heart-warming, and tragic all at once. By the same token, it was hard watching Frank struggle to heal from the wounds left by his mother. Frank and Ilsa both desperately need one another but are afraid to admit their vulnerability. Both have been made and unmade by music. Though their tentative relationship falters, both find healing when they finally come face to face with the thing that they thought would be gone forever. I found myself moved to tears by the end. This is the power of music to heal.

What a read! I LOVED this book, didn't want to put it down. I wanted to listen to all the music he talked about, see if I could hear what he heard. I read it for book club, and am so glad I did. Heart warming beautiful story about love and coming together. So worth reading.

What excellent character development. I found this book a slow start, but it picked up speed more and more and the end was a perfect, harmonic complex climax. I listened on audio, and the reader made distinct voices even more original. The humour was just the right amount, the romance was the right amount, and it left me feeling warm, cherished, and loved.

I really enjoyed the book. It was a lot less about romance than I expected it to be and more about healing through music, which is beautiful and lovely. There is romance in the story, but it's not really the point I don't think.
I wasn't prepared for the depth of trauma that this book holds and if I had gone into the read with that information, I probably would have given it 5 stars.

Goodreads ate my original review.

After a slightly slow start, this book dives into the wonders of music and how it can make us feel. I loved the descriptions of various tracks throughout the book, and the last chapter is pure joy.
