The Music Shop

3.69 AVERAGE

TheMusicShop by Rachel Joyce picks up on a formula often used in books. A shopkeeper with a special ability to find just the right thing for their customer slowly, in solving the concerns of other, manages to find their own path forward. Overall, the stories are feel good reads. The biggest “if” of the stories is the reader’s ability to believe. Unfortunately for me, I never quite buy into the characters or this story.

This is the sort of book I want to hug, I love it so much. Those books are rare for me. The Music Shop was full of quirky characters, damaged souls, wonderful writing, and a beautiful romance. Such a lovely read.

I enjoyed this book more than i thought I would. It was a charming, sweet story. The writing was a little clunky at times (there were some leaps in the development of characters), but I think the characters were real enough and the story charming enough to make it work.

Audiobook review: First let me say it is quite possible that the narrator Steven Hartley MADE this book foe me! Excellent! I don’t give a lot of five star reviews. To me it takes a book that moves me and stays with me when I’m not reading it. This book does that. I love music and I came away from this book with a list of music I want to explore or revisit. It made me nostalgic for vinyl and record stores. It added to my current album listening project. It made me long for the times in the 80s when I would walk into the record store and try to sing the few notes or words in hopes that someone would help me find the album or artist. I could feel the passion. I could smell the records. This is a love story in many ways. But not a romance novel. It is about the love of music. It is about uncovering what we have long ago buried in our souls. It is about how music can unlock us. I can think of so many pieces of music that transports me to a moment, a time, a person, a pain, or a celebration. This book really explains that with a host of interesting characters. It speaks to the change in our society of so many things like the loss of community and retail. I absolutely loved this book.

So close to give stars. Just didn't stick the landing.
Perfect for any music lover or audiophile

Felt like it dragged on quite a lot with not much story to it

Predictable and not anything unique

The premise was cute, the characters were quirky, and all the music throughout was fun. The characters felt a bit scripted in my opinion, making the plot feel more engineered than organic. Not as touching as Harold Fry!

I really wanted the audio book to include the music but it didn't.
Nice story, although a little depressing. I wouldn't call it a love story.
