The Music Shop is this year's, 'I want a book where nothing terrible or depressing happens' and joins the ranks of Fishbowl, The Rosie Project and A Man Named Ove. Rachel Joyce is good at it but she relies a little too much on sentimentality for my taste. Vivaldi is essential listening while reading this charming book.

“Music comes out of silence and at the end it goes back to it. It’s a journey. You see?”

Another book I’ve had on Kindle for a long time, and I finally was able to get to it. I started with the ebook, but thanks to Penguin Random House Audio for the gifted audiobook, I was able to get it finished. This is such a lovely read.

I loved the way this book is put together, and with Frank as the center. Getting his backstory with his mother where you can see how her got his love of music is so interesting. It gives such an insight into his character in the present. He’s stubborn in his love of vinyl, and as the world is changing to cassette tapes and cds, he refuses to sell either in his shop.

The supporting characters are so great because they’re all so different but have formed this supportive family unit. Then Ilse stumbles into this world and engages in a friendship that turns into something more. But there a pieces of their past that hold them both back from committing like they should.

Some parts of this book did feel just little disconnected, but I really did love how it all comes together in the end. It is a really sweet story that was perfect for this time of year.

3 1/2 stars! I wish I'd known from the beginning that this book has a playlist on Spotify: The Music Shop. I tried to keep up with the music mentioned on my own while reading.
