In 1988 Frank owns a music store that only has records. He has a special gift of knowing just the right song to recommend to people to deal with whatever their troubles are. Until Ilse Brauchmann faints outside of his store and throws Frank off. Not only can he not read anything off her, he can't get her off his mind! Over the next few months Frank tries to keep his community running while trying to learn more about Ilse.
This one has been on my shelf for a while. I kinda get what the story was trying to do, but again I think this book just isn't for me. I didn't connect with the characters. There are a lot of books with quirky characters, but this was a book of only quirky characters, and it just seemed like too much at times. The ending gained a star for me. There were some time jumps that made it difficult to catch sometimes while listening to the audiobook.

This was a really sweet, slightly simple, but quirky book. A pleasure to read, and left me with with a really content feeling.

This book is about a man named Frank who owns and lives in his vinyl shop. The book takes place beginning in London around the 1970's- 80's to a more modern time period.
This book was incredibly wholesome and beautiful to me in the way that it explored the human condition through multiple people and their experience with music. Frank, the main protagonist, has a special talent of being able to listen to people, truly listen, and find the exact song they need to hear. The book formats itself by having cute anecdotes of the listening experience for each person he recommends music to, alongside the daily life of Franks life in the store, with his young employee, Kit, alongside a tight community of residents and other business owners on "Unity Street". The descriptions of music made me more appreciative of music and made all the songs sound so incredibly magical. The vivid imagery of the cozy store and the city in winter was just as magical and made it feel like a coming of age movie. This was a light hearted read, that showed the backstory of frank, his childhood, his relationship with his mom, how he affected other people, and ultimately showing his place in the community. The ending was frustrating, simply because you want to wish frank the best. However, it was resolved nicely and left me with a warm feeling.

There's a playlist on Spotify to go with this book.
I enjoyed the bits about music, where Frank waxes lyrical and recommends stuff to Ilse and others and remembers Peg playing records for him when he was growing up.
Some of it was a bit silly, though.
