"Know you are loved"

This mongrel nation of every race and tongue and creed; this gorgeous, sexy old whore of a rock who trades her prejudice for each new passing foreign fad and fancy since history began

...who embraces invader and refugee alike, enforcing empire while offering asylum, innovator and insulator, endlessly absorbing the best of each fresh wave of incomer.

This small but envied nation of contradictions and wonders, monsters and miracles, oppression and sanctuary, enterprise and artistry--this pretty fertile raft of pettiness and invention, prejudice and inspiration, contradiction and perfection.

Oh sweet brave eccentric wondrous England, my home...

With the TV adaptation recently airing on Netflix, I felt it would be best to read the original source before diving in.

All I knew is that it was a murder mystery of sorts set across 4 periods in time. Everything else was a mystery waiting to be revealed.

What I found was something altogether different. A time travel laiden supernatural dystopian. To repair the future, you have to fix the mistakes of the past. A murder across time. Four detectives in different eras. Secret societies. Prostitutes. Orgies. Irish Gangsters. Nazi spies..... Need I go on!

I occasionally got a bit lost with the plot but overall enjoyed this. 4 stars.

The artwork is very impressive and I enjoyed how each era was a different artist but I think the sci-if aspect and story was just wayyyy above my head. I had a hard time understanding it all 😅

This story takes place over 4 different time periods in which an identical crime is committed. I found it hard to follow the story, as well as finding it uninteresting. The art wasn't all that great either except for the 2014 segment, which also possessed the most interesting story, in my opinion. I kept waiting for something to bring these stories together, but when they did it was underwhelming.

Completely different from the Netflix adaptation. I liked the general theme of Bodies the comic book much better than the Netflix story! The message, in a nutshell, is that when you have a chance to change the world, be courageous and change the world for good. Very nice, love that! Also loved the work of the different artists for each time period. In terms of telling a story effectively in comic form, Bodies does a great job.

But unfortunately, the more I reflect upon the story of Bodies, the more I think it really, really, really needed sensitivity readers and then a rewrite. Watch out, I'm going to throw a wet blanket on the whole thing. If anyone reading this review has a different take on the issues below, please let me know--I'm very curious what impressions other readers had. Spoilers ahoy.

My main problem is with the 1940 storyline. The detective, a Jewish refugee from the Nazis, is portrayed as a really bad person--he's committed multiple murders, including that of his own niece, and he is motivated purely by self-interest. There is no character with any significant page-time who is a positive representation of a Jewish person (unless I completely missed something). Whether or not this portrayal was meant to be antisemitic, it reads as such. Because of the persistence and prevalence of antisemitism today--and 10 years ago, when this book was published--I think it's important for authors to consider how they are portraying Jewish characters so that they don't unthinkingly contribute to the explicit and implicit antisemitic messaging that is very common in Western society. The way Weissman was written is certainly A Choice, and not a good one, in my opinion. This is the reason I'm rating Bodies 2 stars and not 4.

Hillinghead's portrayal bothered me, though to a much lesser degree...I just thought it was a bit of a faux pas to write a closeted gay man in 1890 embracing his identity through an occult orgy. Ahaha.

Having really enjoyed the series, I wanted to read the graphic novel. The latter, unfortunately, was pretty disappointing. I'm pretty robust to presentation of the same world/story in different media, and I don't typically have too much trouble appreciating choices that clearly make the most of one medium over another.

But the fact that the GN is so atomized was a big minus—none of the detectives has a family or other stakes. With only the case connecting them, it's hard to be invested.

I can see an argument for not giving Hillinghead a heteronormative family, but is "hey, this is a kinky cult of weird, out of touch, super-rich dudes" somehow an improvement in depicting non-het people? And we just won't get into the "reveal" about the prostitute Hillinghead favors. Suffice it to say: YUCK.

Maplewood's story is just irritatingly opaque and unsatisfying. I still literally don't understand a number of aspects of it.

Shahara's is the most successful, but even here, there's whipsawing about her relationship with the other cop/supervisor (whose name I've forgotten).

The art is cool, but this story is meh at best.

Started great. Disappeared up itself both irritatingly and disappointingly. A series dedicated to the Muslim detective alone would probably be great, though.
