Some stretches of truly incredible prose and dialogue,  and some brilliant character sketches, don't quite make up for the slogging self-indulgence of the thin plot or an environmental message that constantly steps on its own toes. The author gives up on all plant and animal life on planet earth pretty early on, but shows little awareness of the catastrophic effects climate collapse has on human life. People starve, but mainly in the way of needing a snack real bad; there's global conflict, but mainly in the form of isolated quirky ineffectual eco terrorists; what's going on outside of these weird socially isolated white-majority enclaves? Nothing, probably.

"Harrow" by Joy Williams was obviously powerful, but I couldn't hang on to the surrealistic post-apocalyptic story. Funny and compelling in parts, but the climax wrapped around a Kafka and Greek mythology was more than I wanted.
