who needs a plot that’s easy to follow?

the book is basically about a girl who is the sole survivor of a plane crash. she wakes up perfectly healthy somehow but with no memory and then uhh dips to Ireland and ditches her father and escapes from a hospital and falls in love with a random dipshit who gives her money?? oh, then she magically, randomly gets all of her memories back in like a month? it’s kind of a mess. ⁣

the premise of this seemed heart wrenching and unique, but it quickly turned into a wildly unrealistic romance that wasn’t actually romantic. it was also loaded with tropes about being quirky and playing “truth and dare” and dumb boys who have daddy issues telling girls, “i like you better without lipstick and dumb dresses!” ⁣

overall, this book made me cringe and i found myself disliking every character and failing to understand how what about any of this was romantic, emotional, or even entertaining. the ending was surprising and interesting, but the entire middle of the book wasn’t my cup of tea. ⁣

I’d like to see this as a movie

Eighteen year old Clementine is the sole survivor of a plane crash and winds up in an Irish hospital remembering nothing about who she is or anything about her past. She meets Kieran, who says he is volunteering at the hospital. Clementine can’t bear to return to a life she knows nothing about, so she sets about creating a new life for herself with Kieran’s help. This isn’t the kind of book I typically read, but I did end up rather enjoying it. The writing is good, I loved the characters (even if Clementine came off as desperately pushy… I suppose part of that is due to being 18), and I loved the setting in Ireland. The main problem I had was that I felt the entire premise was unbelievable. I can’t imagine waking up not even knowing who I am, but having my wits about me enough to convince a complete stranger to bust me out of the hospital when my dad is just down the hall. I tend to prefer books that are plausible. I decided to think of the book as a movie because I watch movies all the time that are not believable; this novel would make a great movie! Thinking along those lines, I was able to suspend my disbelief for the story. I’m glad I did! The ending (which I saw coming) ties everything together and explains some things I questioned throughout the book. Overall this is a light, quick read that I liked more than I expected.

I received a eARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Although shorter than your average novel, The Upside of Falling Down was a quick, funny, and quirky read. It was predictable in most of its "Twists" and "Turns" but I think for the type of story it was telling, it wasn't meant to be a huge surprise.

You feel for the main character, Clementine/Jane/Bunny, as she tries to find her self after being in a horrible plane crash that leaves her without her memory. She escapes the Hospital in Limmerick with a mysterious and drool worthy Kieran and with him she attempts to find herself and in turn reinvents herself.

If you are looking for a cute and warm and fuzzy quick read, The Upside to Falling down is a great one to reach for.

What a great story! Makes me want to go to Ireland even more, even though it makes me wary of getting on a plane. I loved the story line, and loved it even more when I figured out what the twist was. Great read and would recommend to anyone looking for a good book about love and traveling abroad! Also it was great because they mentioned Shortland Street and I just watched a clip from that show on the Joel McHale Show that was really funny.

2.5/3

it was cute but so predictable and i hated the ending :)

3.5 stars. Good premise and an easy read.

Don't get me wrong - I did like this book. I did not like the rush at the end of everything coming together. For that, I ding one star.
hopeful inspiring lighthearted mysterious

this was perfectly pleasant. at times the cleveland references felt like the 30 rock episode where they go to cleveland. I love the amnesia trope and this was a BONKERS ride... did I predict everything in the end? yes, I sure did. enjoyed it anyway. this had a lot of eye-roll worthy dialogue and lines, such as jane/clementine's declaration that she is, verbatim "an independent woman" who "doesn't need a man" as if this is a 2013 tumblr post. but again, this was at the very least fun and an enjoyable read!!
