Okay. I didn't like or dislike this story.

I did not see the twist in the mystery of Mudas/Muddy mother death or the ending. The ending involving her father made no sense to me as there was no detail in the storyline about the second chance relationship with his ex-wife. It was just thrown in there I suspect to explain the ribbon.

Memorable quotes/lines
And when life’s sweet fable ends. Soul and Body part like friends. No quarrels, murmurs, no delay; A kiss, a sigh, and so away.

Some people aren’t born, they just fall out of the ugly tree and crash into stupidity branches

When a lie seeps into the very heartwood of a town, soaks the beams and posts that hold it up from the earth, the rot sets to its work. The ruin that cruelty brings is always just a matter of time.

This was such a beautiful story - full of mystery, passion, courage, love, and some laughs. I did not know much about this book before I listed to it but I will always remember this one and the narration was spot on - highly recommend!

A little sleuthing, a little dip into the racism of the time and place... I really liked the vocabulary and the images.

TRIGGER WARNING:

Racial injustice/inequity: hangman's trees, the KKK, "n" word, old white men calling a young black man 'boy', and other horrific treatment of thoughts toward black people.

Sexual assault/pedophilia: involving 17-year old female

Gender inequality: examples of "boys will be boys" mentality at work; "she was asking for it"

I listened to this one on Audible. The narrator was fantastic but listening to this one was hard. It made me so angry. Angry at our nation's history of racial, social, and gender injustice. Not that it was the first time I've learned about these things, but stories like this, knowing very similar events likely actually took place in Kentucky in 1972 (or 1890) deeply saddens and angers me.

This story is told very well. It was jarring to read/hear the "n" word so many times. I understand it was true to the era, but I hate that word.

I did enjoy the story and was ready to fight with the characters in their conflict, cry with them in their pain and celebrate with them in their victories.

Listened on audio-book which I'm sure swayed my feelings about the book. It was okay for the first half but the over-done accents and the stereo-typical characters began to wear on me in the second half to the point that I was just wanting it to be over. Glad to be free of this one.

I thought this was a great coming of age story (almost mystery) set in the Deep South. Characters are developed, but not too intense. It’s an easy read and I enjoyed it.

A mystery and coming of age story set in Kentucky in the 1970’s. The end of this made me an anxious mess as I was listening to the audio version!
