This is definitely a product of it's time. If you are used to reading romance books written in the last decade or so, some elements of the story may be unsettling. There were definitely some moments that made me uncomfy, even though I liked the characters and the plot. The relationship at the center of the story is definitely a little bit unhealthy. If you can suspend your disbelief, it is engaging and written well.
