i love love love dickens. the symbolism never fails. I did NOT expect the ending at all, but it immediately made sense because of just a couple words he mentioned 50 pages earlier. the way he links the tiniest details over hundreds of pages embodies everything I want to do as a writer. never a loose end in sight, even when the “perfect ending” involves a flood of “wine.”

Fitting to finish this on Halloween, in Dickens own true words, 4a horror story. I had no idea what this tale was going to be about and was delighted to find out the cities were two that i had been to, but not mildly repulsed to learn it would delve deeply into the Reign of Terror that accompanied the French Revolution. The most chilling line for me was this one, after thousandfold beheadings, perpetrated by the very oppressed: "“Sow the same seed of rapacious license and oppression over again, and it will surely yield the same fruit according to its kind.” Take heed ye modern day Billionaires, restrain your rapacious license and oppression, or I fear the alternative could be far worse than higher taxes.
I find it hard to enjoy dickens because the repetition always makes me think that he is trying to pad out the chapters in the serialisation loool - but especially the last book of this, really really really enjoyed it
Ngl I didn't know what was happening in this book but had a fun time nonetheless.
