I preferred How Much Land Does A Man Need? to What Men Live By.
The morals they convey are definitely not subtle, and God message particularly in What Men Live By is very very heavy handed to the level of church sermon which probably would not be everyone's cup of tea. But they were well crafted and I think How Much Land Does A Man Need is beautifully written.
It is worth considering though did Tolstoy perhaps abuse the poor people's plight for capitalist gain, similarly to how Mayhew did with the London's poor ?
