An enjoyable folkloric tale of a man’s greed for land. The writing style is simple and vivid, the characters are well developed in very few sentences and the final scene is a perfect Russian ending.

I checked this book out from the library because it's a Tolstoy book. I didn't know Tolstoy had written any children's books. This afternoon I sat down on the couch with my daughter (14) and said I was going to read her a book. She was ecstatic! We were both interested in the illustrations, which are extremely colorful. The story started out interesting but it was obvious what the moral was going to be. My daughter is an ELL student and the writing was a bit above her level so she fell asleep about 3/4 of the way through it. I finished the last page and shut the book with a cry of disbelief.
SpoilerThe expected moral was the delivered one but I was really taken aback at how it was portrayed! Yikes!
