I love Mister Rogers (and this book) so dang much. This book was lovely, and so needed, and I especially enjoyed how it was broken up into a biography of his life and the show, and then the second part was “10 ways to live like Mr. Rogers right now,” drilling down into lessons/precepts to become “the helpers.” I thought that was such a great way of explaining the power of Mr. Rogers, and making him even more relevant in today’s rapidly changing world.
I absolutely LOVED this bit in the introduction where the author is talking about the chaos of the world in 2019 and thought it was so relevant and relatable and spot on. (Pages 8 & 9)
“It’s completely understandable if, in the face of constant disasters and atrocities, your impulse is to hide under the covers. You should know, however, that Mister Rogers would not want you to give into despair—it’s not good for the world, and it’s not good for you. He believed that by talking about our greatest fears and trials, we could conquer them, both in our hearts, and in the world. Changing people’s attitudes is the only way to achieve mass action—which is what we need to save our planet...a better world is worth fighting for. We can be like Mister Rogers. We too can make the world a better place, with love and forgiveness and kindness and wonder.”

This book was the summer "beach read" at my library. It was a nice change of pace to read an encouraging, hopeful book after a few historical fiction and more serious non-fiction reads. Although Mr. Rodgers was not my favorite preschool show (that honor goes to Sesame Street), I do have fond memories of watching the PBS shows - Sesame Street, Mr.Rodgers, Electric Company, and Zoom. The first half of the book is a well-researched biography of Fred Rogers. The second half claims to be a list of lessons from Mr. Rodgers, but it seems more of a way to tell additional stories that did not quite fit with the flow of the biography. This is a cozy read that will give you many ideas of ways to bring more kindness and joy into the world and the encouragement to make a difference to the people around you.
