I have to be honest, I didn’t enjoy this follow up nearly as much as the original. It just seemed to be uneven in pacing - much of the trio portion seemed too fast and I really would have liked to see more of their adventures. The entire first half of the novel felt like it was missing the heart that made me love the first book. I enjoyed the ending third or so of the book so much more. It was still fun, and some great moments of humor, but it just wasn’t what I was hoping for, considering how much I had loved the first book.

I love Steven Rowley and I love GUP. The way he effortlessly blends gay quip with reminiscence on queer history and the power of reconnection with family makes him infinitely endearing. Also the London/Italy settings are right up my alley.
I loved Patrick's relationship with Gay Aunt Palmina too, the way that she teases him throughout their entire arc but in a loving way (eventually)

You ever see a the hype and reviews of a book, start reading it, and wonder if you're reading the same book everyone else was? I did not love this book. The main character is really annoying, the dialogue felt forced, and I'm not sure what the point of the travel was because they didn't really get into exploring those locations.

Maybe I missed something because I haven't read The Guncle, but this was just "eh."
