While this sequel packed less of a punch than its predecessor, it was still a fun read.

What made me love the first book was GUP helping Maisie and Grant with their (and his own) grief. The novelty of it has worn off a little with this sequel, in my opinion. The plot made less sense, so I feel this was definitely less strong than the original book.

Am I still glad that there’s a sequel? Yes! I loved the ending actually. And I still really enjoyed being back with  GUP and his niblings. The characters are the strongest aspect of this book.

I'll preface that I think this is a cute read and a good sequel! However, it felt like the heartfelt magic and vulnerability of the first book got lost here. The original characters felt like they got flattened a bit and turned into stereotypes of themselves. It felt like theoretically they should be growing based on the text I was reading, but it just didn't translate to me personally. The kids seemed overshadowed and demoted to accessory characters which was sad.

I was very happy to see a few things happen in this sequel. Although predictable, I loved the ending, it made me cry! I also REALLY appreciated that the author made Patrick reckon with his cis gay male privilege and misogyny which was skirted around in the first book.
