I really liked The Guncle, the first book in this series, and I was hoping to like this one just as much, but was a bit disappointed. The Guncle is the story of Maisie and Grant who go to live with their gay uncle (Guncle) Patrick after their mother dies and their father goes to rehab. That story deals with all three of them coming to terms with grief and loss—Patrick at the loss of his best friend and the children at the loss of their mom. It was a lovely story about love.

This story revisits the characters 5 years later. Maisie and Patrick’s father is getting remarried in Italy, Guncle Patric has broken up with his partner, and they’re all traveling to Italy for the wedding.

Patrick takes Maisie and Grant on a tour of Europe before the wedding and they have a few adventures. Maisie wants Guncle Patrick to stop the wedding.

The story is a bit thin, Patrick is really annoying at times, and some of the story just doesn’t add up. Some of the writing is lovely though and that’s what’s deserving of the half star (above 3). Overall just okay.

I loved this book so much. The second was as charming and fun as the first. I cried in this one too. I love the wit and love laced into every page. 4.5 stars. Thank you to the author for another amazing read!
