This has quickly become one of my favourite series. I love Castillo’s writing and the way she weaves past and present together as well as the research she puts into the sects of the Amish. I also love how imperfect she makes her characters to give them that realistic element.
There are a lot of elements within this book that should make it overwhelming but it’s done well enough to work. Things start out good but it doesn't take long before the tension starts. Then Kate gets a phone call. There is a tornado in the area and it is headed straight for Painters Mill. There is loss of life, including a baby that Kate could not save and a cold case that comes back to light.
Kate also discovers she is pregnant and is not sure how to tell Tomasetti. Tomasetti (who lost his first wife and children to a murderer and went to very dark places) and Kate (who had an abortion early in her life that was traumatic) are still building their dynamic living together and being in a relationship. Marriage has never really been discussed much less children. I hated the way Tomasetti handled it at first, looking to put the blame on Kate for not being caREFUL WITH HER BIRTH CONTROL LIKE EXCUSE ME SIR IT TAKES TWO TO MAKE A BABY YOU INCONSIDERATE F—
I was loving the story until near the end. The forensic element was fascinating as the methodology was something new and educational. I will always marvel at how much science can reveal from bones even this old. The audio version continues to be outstanding as the narrator not only does a good job with the storytelling and pacing but manages the Pennsylvania Dutch skillfully. My hope is that the author will do better by Kate going forward because I'm getting weary of her always landing in physical danger due to her own bad judgment. She's a smartly crafted character who deserves better. Considering how long this series, it’s very repetitive how often Kate gets hurt because she was put into danger. I know it’s dangerous being a Chief of Police but every book?? Cmon now

O to víc, kniha vyniká prostředím, a svým celkovým zasazením a umístěním.

I enjoy this series, but this last one was my favorite by far. The mystery, the internal relationships, the ending were all terrific. I will never look at farm pigs the same way.
