Quickly skimming other reviews I see I'm not the only one let down by the ending. Even if that's how it had to end, I wish it wasn't done so abruptly. This was otherwise an intriguing exploration of significant trauma and it's ripple effects. It was much darker than I expected, checking the content warnings is a must. I really became attached to Sally and her growth, and appreciated the characters that supported her through the process.

I found the conflict/reveal about the adoptive parents towards the end unnecessary and I didn't get the point of Caroline?

I absolutely loved the main character. Although socially inept, she did her best to grow even given the circumstances. The story was dark and the ending wasn’t what I expected but it made sense. The audiobook narrators were fantastic too, definitely a good option.

I jumped into this book blind, which was a mistake because I was completely blindsided by how dark it turned out to be. But it was a page turner I couldn't stop reading. I guess that's why I was disappointed with the ending, which fell pretty flat imo.
But props to the author for getting one indisputable fact of life right: all the therapy in the world and all of the inner work you've put in can be unravelled in a moment by one toxic family member. xD

I loved this book and how the past and present plot lines were interwoven. The ending left me feeling hollow

especially since Lindy never got proper justice. Stockholm Syndrome fully took hold of her and it made me so sad that she lost the will to escape even when she finally could. I understand the trauma Peter went through but I was hoping he would come to a revelation about his darkness and how he’s not actually quite so different from his dad. The last chapter of his discussing his thoughts about kidnapping again was chilling.

so -1/2 star although given the darkness of situations like these in real life, it’s fair that’s there’s not truly a “happy ending”
