This has to be one of my favorite books I have read this year. I loved the characters and the plot. The songs mentioned made me love the book even more. This is very underrated! I wish it was in hardcover

Roaring by Lindsey Duga is a unique book. I haven't read a historical fantasy book. Set in the 20's it all starts with Eris, a singer at a speakeasy who literally has no idea she's a siren, until a bar fight ensues, leaving a monster hunter named Colt hot on her chase. As the two "hate" each other, they eventually fall in love, and while their romantic journey is somewhat predictable... The world building was intricate and very nicely done. I felt like I was with the character's themselves. I would've enjoyed having a bit more details about the historical aspect of it (given it took place in the 20's), and the plot at one point was predictable. For a standalone book, the plot was a little too rushed and I think a sequel would've been nice, so you don't overwhelm the reader. Despite the plot being somewhat predictable, it did feel rushed in some parts, but overall it was a good book that I enjoyed.

This book covers the story about Aeris, a Siren on the run, trying to learn more about her past. A mysterious historical fiction about the roaring twenties meets monsters, mobsters, a dark government sector, a sprinkle of romance and action adventure with an interesting twist.

I'm really surprised that there are only a handful of reviews for this book. Will it blow your socks off? Most probably not but it's a delightfully quick standalone adventure and I really enjoyed it.

Thank you so much to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Set in 1929, Roaring takes place in a unique alternate universe where monster exist. Mobs and other high powered individuals have started genetically modifying humans to create creatures of legends; basilisks, manticores, and even gorgons. This story follows Colt Clemmons, an agent for the Bureau of Investigations, tasked with hunting down monsters, and Eris, a girl who’s voice is her most powerful weapon.

The concept and overall world for this book is SO COOL! First of all I am a sucker for any and everything set in the 1920s, so to add the mythological creature aspect on top of the time period and atmosphere is such an exciting and unique concept. It also created high stakes for our characters. Not only do they have to worry about high powered mobsters, but said mobsters have special abilities and strengths. It created such a fast paced and action packed story that I wanted to keep reading to know what would happen next and how Colt and Eris would get out of every predicament they got into.

The downside of the constant action was that unfortunately, I did not feel like there was a lot of actual character development and the romance side of the book was lacking. Eris is a monster, Colt is a monster hunter, and I wanted to see a lot more tension, but it felt like there was a little too much instalove for my taste.

Another downside of the constant fight scenes and danger was there ended up a lot of info dumping, especially in the first half, through both regular dialogue and the character’s internal dialogue, and it ended up hindering the overall flow.

This is a solid 3 star read. It was fun to read and I still love the concept and I thought the double meaning in the title was really clever, but the flow and character arc was lacking a little too much for me.

My absolute favourite mythological creatures to read about are sirens and Roaring flips the mythology on its head in a clever and unique way. How can a siren story be unique you ask? Well for starters there is no ocean in sight.

Roaring is set in the 1920’s flapper era and is filled with mobsters, gangsters and hunters. Eris is a siren and works at a speakeasy as a singer and barmaid and while she sings for the crowd she never speaks. She was always told to never use her voice to speak because it compels people to do whatever she asks. The strategy has worked until one night when she finds herself in a position where she cannot help but speak.

Colt is the hunter tasked with capturing the only siren in the world after an agent spots her in a bar but he soon realises that this mission won't be as straightforward and he first thought.

The story is told between the alternating perspectives of Eris and Colt and I loved that we get both characters taking on the situations at hand. They are such compelling characters and are so well rounded. Being set in the 1920’s I appreciated all the work Luga put in to ensuring the slang and lingo of the time was represented and that there was a glossary of terms I could refer to if there was anything I didn’t quite get. This authenticity really helped centre me in this era for the entire read.

How does a siren story take place without water? I honestly didn’t miss the ocean in Roaring as the sea (excuse the pun) of monsters and mobsters completely made up for it. There is the idea that humans can be spliced with mythological creatures was a fun, intriguing and totally unexpected twist. On top of an exciting storyline and beautiful scene descriptions there is an enemies to lovers style romance throughout which I absolutely adored.

*received a review copy on Net Galley in exchange for an honest review- thank you! this does not affect my opinions or my review in any way.*

I was most drawn to "Roaring" because of its fascinating world. It's set in the roaring 20's in a world with an illicit monster trade, where monster parts can be added to humans to give them mythical abilities. This premise, especially considering the fact the protagonist is a siren and is hardly on sea, was enchantingly unique and kept me invested throughout.

Not only is the world interesting and well-built, but the fight scenes are very well-written. The specific language and choreography used for each fight was almost reminiscent of a movie, and was another fun aspect of this book!

However, the one way this book fell flat for me was the romance. Entangled is a romance publishing company, and I wanted to root for the main couple. However, for me, they felt flat as a romantic pairing; the buildup and connection between them seemed minimal and I much better liked them as friends.

On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! By drawing on the glitzy world of the 1920s while also adding a fresh aspect of urban fantasy, "Roaring" is a fun, action packed read that I'd recommend to fans of "The Diviners" or "The Mortal Instruments!"

Wow, I was honestly not expecting to like this book as much as I did, but I really enjoyed it!

The 1920s setting with mobsters and monsters was a lot more intriguing and well done than I thought it would be. Also the main characters Clay & Eris , were so good. I loved them.

There were two scenes in the second half of the book that did get steamy but it stopped and nothing happened.

Would definitely recommend for any fantasy romance lovers or historical low fantasy lovers also.
