I loved the idea/setup of this book. It’s about a group of college friends that get together for the first time in several years when one of them opens up an Alfred Hitchcock themed hotel. However, I didn’t like any of the characters which left me uninvested so I ended up not caring what happened to any of them. So unfortunately it fell a bit flat for me. It was fine- it had some twists and spooky vibes but in general it had potential to be better than it was.

Read this on a whim, and it started off well. Lots of rich character development with enough intrigue to keep the pages turning (or listening as it were), building suspense in a surreptitious way. Then the middle of the book gets really mundane with EVERY character having secrets revealed, from silly to serious. Then the "main event" occurs, and from there it felt like a herd of turtles stomping through molasses. Inane conversations. Minute details with no foundational purpose. A literal back and forth conversation with the police and each suspect. Just get on with it already!! Finally, at the bitter end, the big twist is revealed and all the justification in the world can't make it make sense. It was a lot of work for a little reward, and the characters were all so ridiculous that I couldn't have cared less if all of them had been murdered. I'm going to give it a 3-star rating because this kind of slow burn is right up the alley for some readers. The plot itself could be worthwhile, I'm just bitter because the investment for me wasn't worth the return. 3-stars

This isn't a bad book, but I've come to learn that thrillers just aren't for me. I also don't care for characters that are extremely hung up on their high school or college days (although in this case one could argue it was justified). Still, this book is great for anyone who loves a classic thriller with lots of twists and turns - that is just not me.

I’ll admit, I expected this one to be more horror than thriller, but I ended up mostly enjoying it.

I’m a big Hitchcock fan so the title alone grabbed me. References to his work throughout was fun and I’m a sucker for a multiple POV novel, which this one did very well.

This was definitely more a murder mystery than a suspense novel. There really weren’t many heart pounding moments but the thrill of the mystery was still there.

On that note, the reasoning behind the whole thing was a tad lackluster. The author tried to make it more compelling but adding in some interesting twists, but overall it seemed too far fetched. And I’m not one who needs a novel to be believable, but the reasoning behind every other action in the book needed more oomph, in my opinion.

There were multiple twists towards the end which was great fun. Some predictable, some jaw dropping. The one major issue with this novel for me was not one character was likable. I don’t usually enjoy books about college age kids and while the main event happens when they are adults, there are so many flash backs that just slogged on. If I think about it, Alfred was maybe the only one with some depth.

Would I recommend it? Sure.
