The author did a good job building suspense, and there were some plot twists that kept it interesting. I didn't really like any of the characters, but I thought they were well developed. I'm interested in reading more by this author.

Maybe it’s just the mood I’m in, but I found this book so sad. Slow and sad.
I think what the book was going for was more of a building sense of dread (no body until like 2/3 through) with morally grey characters. And it had a lot of the themes I like in suspense- frenemies, a remote location and a storm, a secret shared history that is revealed through reminiscences.
But I just kept sympathizing with the worst characters, like we all make mistakes in our youth, we all want people to like us, we’re all a little weird.Grace was the absolute worst, but everyone else wasn’t a money-loving psychopath. Well, Albert wasn’t great, but he was more of the villain that had never succeeded in his life. Never had friends that really liked him, built a thing that no one really liked, had no family. I cried actual damn tears when he went to his academic hearing all alone. And then all the reveals at the end of the book being like “see, no one actually liked him ever” and I was just sadder and mad that I was sympathetic to essentially a creep with a grudge. But like I said, maybe I’m just in a mood.
Also, who has an aviary filled with crows? I’m not from New England, but aren’t crows just fine out in the wild?

This book has a lot of film noir references which are to be expected, but I also noticed quite a few tropes from literature such as "Rebecca", Agatha Christie, Donna Tartt, etc. To me the references weren't quite subtle enough, but the premise was intriguing and book enjoyable.
