This is the best Superman origin story, without a doubt. Each of the relationships Clark has with his parents, with Lois, and even with Luthor are well-written and effortlessly charming. Johns' understanding of who exactly Clark Kent/Kal-El is should be textbook reading for any fan of Superman. Especially DC writers.

The art may be a little weird at times, but c'mon, that's Christopher Reeve.

There is no reason to read this if you know anything about Superman, so I don't know why I was recommended it. The art is great, but there is nothing here that is memorable or new in any way.

I felt that Lex was the weakest part of this book, and was obnoxious and evil from the very beginning, without there being any real journey to the nemesis he turned out to be. He just... aged, from an evil tempered kid to an evil tempered adult. Clark/Superman had the best development, but again, it felt rehashed (because it was).

[b:Superman: Birthright|8172|Superman Birthright|Mark Waid|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1165653718s/8172.jpg|11126] did a far better job at retelling the origins of Lex and Clark (Smallville style) as childhood friends and then as enemies, and I would recommend that over this.

I know a lot of people are complaining about this, because it's "just the same old story." That may be true, but it's a story that I never get sick of. This had some unique elements to it, but for the most part if was just a retelling of the classic Superman origin. I absolutely loved the art and I especially enjoyed the Smallville segment. My one complaint was that they jumped to Metropolis too quickly. I would have liked some more of the teen years. Anyway, this is definitely worth reading.

Overall a pretty good origin story. It doesn't do anything specially interesting, but works pretty well as a starting point for the character and does a good job at stating the hopefulness of Superman as a figure for all to follow.
