I'm not typically a fan of historical fiction..but this was an exception.
This is the story of Anton, whose family was murdered after a man was shot in his neighborhood and ended up in front of his house. Set in the Netherlands post World War I, Nazis are still a factor and come into play in this story. The story follows Anton, the survivor of this traumatic event, and how he goes through the next decades of his life. This is not a story about love, about grief, or even about the war. This is a story about how an event can have so many perspectives, and what we perceive as right or wrong can be easily shifted once we take a look at different facts. This book opens your eyes to how the world is not always black and white, and emphasizes the idea of the butterfly effect, which essentially states that small things can have a large impact and set many gears into motion. I liked this book because it made me THINK. It didn't just give me all the answers, it made me ask questions, too.
The story of Anton turned out to be more complicated than I had expected, and the author did a great job of wrapping up all the facts by the end. I really enjoyed this one and ill definitely be reading it again.

En op het einde komt alles samen en bedacht ik dat het toch een mooi verhaal was.
A Haze of Gray
I was assigned this book in my Global Literature class in college and fell in love with its story. This book stresses how war and evil influences can make for a lack of black or white, right or wrong decision making. It shows how innocent people become swept up in the evil influences and how absurd life can become.
The Assault is a great story about the Dutch Resistance during World War II and how the war affects Anton Steenwijk, who's family all died by the hands of the Germans when he was only ten. The story extends into later decades and gives the reader a glimpse into some of the social, relational and psychological consequences Anton must work through and cope with. It is a page turner and fascinating to read all the way up until the "surprise" twist in the end. I would definitely recommend it.

Well worth reading. Might be tempted to read more of Mulisch's books in the future.
