great story, mystery, and history of trauma. good writing and nice structure.

Beetje uitgekauwd.

Meh. The beginning was wonderful but the ending was....meh. Not my favorite but not every English assignment is going to be great.

since i now live in europe, i am trying to read more books by non-american authors...specifically books by dutch authors and wow, this book was incredible.

i love books that deal with the past and memory and how characters cope with and understand these two powerful concepts. this book begins with a traumatic event at the end of wwII that orphans the main character. the book then follows anton as he ignores what happen to him but ultimately is unable to maintain his ignorance.

one of my favorite quotes: "Whenever he thought about time, which he did once in a while, he did not conceive of events as coming out of the future to move through the present into the past. Instead, they developed out of the past in the present on their way to an unknown future." (151)

fantastic read and makes me look forward to reading more dutch authors in the near future.

A Dutch book about WO II. Usually, not something I'm interested in, but the amazing writing style made it a must read. Be prepared to cry though!

Wow

Beautiful novel and typical for Mulisch, he once again is showing off his knowledge (he was a great writer, but a very idle man). It's an interesting story, but the characters are not fully developed, though. The central theme is about the divide between the truth and being right, and, of course, that is extremely relevant in a war setting!

Goed.

"Ook het afgegrensde moet steeds afgegrensd worden; maar de taak is hopeloos, want alles raakt alles in de wereld. Een begin verdwijnt nooit, zelfs niet met het einde."
