Another author who I enjoyed as a kid! I always had my nose in a book.
My least favorite of all the Henry Huggins books.
Read aloud to my kids (6 yo, 8 yo). five stars from both of them; 4.5 stars from me. Plot-wise this is one of my favorite Henry books, actually. Henry’s quest for a bike is so well done, so satisfying to read. I was laughing a lot.
But I also had to insert lots of reminders throughout… not eating candy you find in a parking lot, not going with strangers out of the building you’re in, not keeping anything we find, etc.

My kiddo loved Henry’s quest for his bike money, especially all the exploits with the bubble gum!
This is the one I remembered--Henry desperately wants a bike and he tries everything to get it.
Good stuff.
Good stuff.
The second book in the beloved Henry Huggins series. This book finds Henry working to earn enough money to buy his very own bicycle. As with the other books in the series, there are elements that out-of-date by today’s standards. I’ve seen other reviewers mention that they “edited” or omitted parts as they read aloud to their children. I prefer to use those parts of the books as jumping off points for conversations with my children. An added bonus to Henry and Beezus: a very young Miss Ramona Geraldine Quimby is fleshed out more as a character. And, as I think we all know, she adds extra zest to almost any situation.
lighthearted
fast-paced

Tooth fairy spoiler alert!
A great read aloud for my first grader. Although every once in a while with Cleary’s older books we have to stop and explain certain things to today’s kids (cloak room, skate key, the fact that the kids seem to roam the neighborhood with no adult supervision)this was a great read for my first grader. My preK kid also listened but did not enjoy it as much.
A sweet book! Reminds me of [b: Homer Price|766917|Homer Price|Robert McCloskey|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1348994806s/766917.jpg|3259531]. A "good ol boy" in the Baby Boomer generation. And since Henry is maybe 9 years old, he thinks with the entirety of the brain in his skull. He has a good friend who lives down the street: Beatrice, popularly known as Beezus.
Ugh, just look at this cutie, who just won a raffle prize!

He thinks it's super cool to tie a balloon on to the button on his beanie!!!
All Henry wants in life is a new bicycle. He spends this entire book trying to raise money, pennies at a time, to buy a bicycle that is worth SIXTY entire DOLLARS.
And all he wants to do with it is this:

He wants to wear his imitation raccoon skin cap, and he wants to remove the removable tail, and he wants to snap the tail on to the handle bars of his brand new shiny red bicycle! (And if the bike has a bell and lights on the front and back, that would be nice too, but those can be purchased at a later date, thankyou)
OMG Henry is good and conscientious and sweet! He takes care of his dog Ribsy. And he is a good friend to his neighbor Beezus, AND to her little sister Ramona.
He is just a darn good citizen, dontcha know?!!

1.5 stars rounded up. I know, I know! But consider Beezus gets co-billing in the title, and Henry spends so much of the book complaining about "dumb girl stuff." And yes, Ramona was annoying, but it still didn't work for me.
