As a modern Anne of Green Gables retelling, this book was great, packed with references, nostalgia, and swoon-worthy Anne and Gilbert moments. As just a story, and a romance, this book was fine. The pacing was off at times, and some of the conflict felt contrived. However, I’m a huge AGG fan and this was such a fun read from that perspective.

Maybe I’m doing this novel a disservice as I know virtually nothing about Anne of Green Gables, so I went into this one pretty ignorant of the way the characters connected and the allusions this retelling draws to the original.

As a lighthearted, easy to read romance, ANNE OF MANHATTAN does its job. We have Anne, a grad student in New York City, who reconnects with Gil, her childhood crush from their hometown of Avonlea. There’s a tinge of enemies to lovers throughout, done mostly through flashbacks to their childhoods. I either love a flashback or I absolutely loathe them and I think here, they worked. The thread of the novel that I enjoyed most was the flashbacks to Anne’s childhood with Marilla and Matthew and honestly? The romantic aspect of the book paled in comparison to that plot line.

Something about this one fell short for me. Maybe it’s because I’m not an Anne of Green Gables enthusiast who was eager to see how these childhood characters transferred to adult life, or maybe it’s because the plot points that I thought had legs moved too quickly (like the bombshell that dropped 90% through the book).

Overall? I enjoyed but have definitely read better retellings.

Anne of Manhattan is an enemies to lovers romance featuring Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe, an Anne and Gil who are now both grad students in contemporary Manhattan. This certainly won’t be for purists (Diana is bi, Fred is a tattoo artist, Green Gables a vineyard) but I found it fun to see the liberties the author took with Anne’s story while still retaining the essence. Things definitely get steamy in places, possibly making it difficult to read the original books in quite the same way again. I appreciated one of the storylines centred on sexual harassment in the academic world. It certainly highlighted the insidious nature of much of this harassment. Fast paced fun with the requisite happy ending.

Super fun, for some reason it felt slow and fast at the same time. There were aspects that I wish were developed more.

Pros
• Their banter before they got together was so adorable and fun.
• Gil was basically written in the image of Timothy Chalet.
• Diana is a delight
• There were an appropriate amount of high and low emotional points.
• This is the most realistically executed hate-to-love romance I’ve ever read. It feels very grounded in reality.
• Slow burn

Cons
Gil examining why him saying “I’m done” was so hurtful to Anne. He understands her history, but doesn’t consider it in the context of what he does and why she reacted the way she did.

• It felt simultaneously fast and slow
• I wish there was more banter/dialogue
• Slow burn
