Fast paced read, has great potential for reluctant readers. Some uneven pacing and lots of unanswered questions in the end.

I was very hooked with this story but it got increasingly frustrating when the mystery and unanswerable questions kept popping up and no explanations were found, not even a little bit. I shouldn't be surprised after all bc I know this is how DJM writes but jeez, does he have to follow the same formula ALL THE TIME?! It feels like cheating. Also I don't believe for a second that
Quinn, Feit and Captain Granger are dead
. If you know DJM's writing like I do, you know it's true. Despite its bunch of flaws there were moments that shined and I'll be sticking around for book 2.

This book was clearly aimed at middle grade boys. I am not the target audience but I can still appreciate the good writing.

The MC should have been aged up. 14 is too young for all that the Author has him do, especially in the 2nd book and 3rd book.

When D.J. read the first chapter last year in Cascade, I thought he said it was Science Fiction but after reading this book, I'm still not sure that it is. But what ever. The book did start out slow, after the first chapter. And the cliff hanger is going to drive me crazy. But I did like the book. My biggest problem is that I still know next to nothing about what SYLO is and what is going on! But I trust the author and am willing to wait.....just not patiently!

A 2015-2016 Truman MO Readers Award nominee.

This was pretty much a pure action book. My son loved it. I got tired of it after a while. It leaves the reader with a lot of questions. There is a huge reveal right at the end of the book that generates more questions than answers.

This book was great at building tension. For the first half of the book the mystery kept getting deeper and I was hooked... But the more I read, the less I cared, because I got no answers. Apparently more happens in the second book, but at this point, I'm over it.

This book took a while to get into the action but once it did, it never stopped. Just as you think everything is going well and they're all going to be fine, something happens to screw it all up. I'll be yelling about this book for weeks (In a good way!) (And there's 2 more books in the series).

Read at your own risk, chances are you'll be hooked and have to read all the books immediately. I loved all the characters, and my predictions about them were repeatedly proven wrong which left me guessing until the end. The characters were anything but flat, they were all multi-faceted and there are still parts of their past I haven't figured out yet. I loved this book and could hardly put it down!
