The best of the "Lone City" trilogy.
Each step in reading this series had me questioning whether to continue reading it or not. After "The Jewel", I was unsure if I wanted to keep reading this series, but something within me wanted to see this to the end. After "The White Rose", I knew I wanted t read the next book because of that cliffhanger, but I was still so uncertain.
After reading "The Black Key", I'm glad I finished. It was quite a satisfying end to a trilogy. I actually felt emotional at some of the events that happened.
There was more action than before, and the pacing was just right, which is why I believe this book was more successful than the other two.
Still can't shake certain vibes that the series gives off - like it's inspirational sources; stories I've already read and loved.
One thing I'm immensely satisfied with is Raven's revenge, and that Violet didn't follow through with her promise to Cora. I think that would have destroyed the nature of Violet's character.

I really wanted to like this book but I was not surprised that I didn't. I did not love the second book, I did not connect with the characters and therefore did not care for them very much. Violet as a character was very irritating because she behaved like a child and did not think her actions through. This book overall felt rushed and the underdeveloped characters and the rushed storyline did not connect with me. I did finish it because I had read the other two books in the trilogy and the final book was very short.

LOVED THIS BOOK😍 I love that almost every chapter ended with a cliffhanger and all the feminism in this book!! Can’t believe I haven’t picked this up sooner, but I’m also sad that it is over😭

THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!!! There was an incredible amount of action and plenty of plot twists as well. It was the perfect ending to a great trilogy.

Het eerste boek in deze serie was geweldig. De wereld is enorm gruwelijk, op een bepaalde manier misschien nog wel gruwelijker dan The Hunger Games en Divergent, maar ook enorm intrigerend. In het tweede boek kregen we daarnaast een heleboel antwoorden en duidelijkheid. De personages konden zich dan ook gaan voorbereiden op de eindstrijd en ik ook. Ik had dan ook enorm veel zin in dit laatste deel!
Ik moet eerlijk toegeven dat ik had verwacht dat dit boek wat spectaculairder zou zijn. Ik had verwacht dat de eindstrijd zwaar en moeilijk zou worden, dat we nagenoeg het hele boek aan het vechten zouden zijn, dat alles niet zonder slag of stoot zou gaan. En hoewel alles uiteraard niet van een leien dakje liep, duurde het wel enorm lang voor de eindstrijd daadwerkelijk begon. Het voelde alsof de auteur eerst nog allerlei omwegen had bedacht.
En die omwegen voegden wat mij betreft niet altijd iets toe. Onze hoofdpersoon gaat terug the Jewel in om haar zusje te redden en beschermen, maar uiteindelijk kan ze weinig doen tot het daadwerkelijke eindgevecht begint. Ik had denk ik persoonlijk liever gezien dat we wat meegekregen hadden van de voorbereidingen aan de kant van de burgers, bij de gezelschapsjongens, de surrogaten, de boeren en andere mensen die nog nooit the Jewel van binnen hebben gezien.
Ik miste daarnaast de echte spanning in het eindgevecht. Omdat het pas vlak voor het einde van het boek echt begint, weet je als lezer al dat het niet al te lang gaat duren en er niet al te veel meer mis kan gaan. Er zijn immers te weinig pagina's om dat te doen. Gelukkig kwam niet iedereen ongeschonden uit de strijd en overleefde ook niet iedereen het verhaal. Dat gaf in elk geval WEL het gevoel dat het allemaal niet vanzelf ging.
Alsnog was deze serie zeker de moeite waard, al is het maar omdat het concept misselijkmakend is, maar niet eens zo onwaarschijnlijk ver weg...

Addicting
I picked up Jewel a few days ago and was immediately hooked and had to buy the rest of the series which I devoured in two days! While reading it I was reminded of The Handmaids Tale meets Hunger Games with magic woven in. I definitely recommend this trilogy.
