Classic Koontz thriller with heart, witty banter, a main character with a lowkey traumatic backstory, and lots of action. The audio narrator did an amazing job.

As usual with his work of the last decades he takes a great story idea and ruins it by ham handily and constantly inserting his political beliefs and world view into the story. I don't even necessarily disagree with him, but just tell me a story. Stop preaching.

I don't think I would've liked this book as much had I read a hard copy.

2.0

I have enjoyed Dean Koontz books in the past, and was thrilled to see such a well-known author put his hat in the ring for January selections on Kindle First Reads. In reading the summary, I was excited about the premise of "nice" vs "mean". There is too much mean out there in the world today and I say that everytime I leave my house. I also have enjoyed the author's writing style in previous books which is super short chapters, which were quick-paced and kept me reading.

I also LOVED the title of the book. I just knew this friend was going to be so cool, and couldn't wait to meet him.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed in the delivery of the concept. This book is unlike his previous writings, and here, I found myself wanting the plot to move quicker, and more depth. It seemed like Benny had a great life going and then just one day, everyone turned on him. The backstory took too long and I struggled with trying to understand it, and subsequently, was unable to connect to the main character in a meaningful way.

I still love a good revenge story, and this book had a ton of potential in concept. Disappointed that it did not deliver for me. Reading other reviews, it sounds like it resonated with others so it may just be me.

DID NOT FINISH

I did not enjoy the "Narrator" excerpts. They interrupted the flow of the story too much for me.
