What a weird novel…
I’ve read Dean Koontz for almost 35 years, and I know he writes across all genres…
But this one felt a bit out of nowhere and like it was two stories mashed into one.
Sure, it was charming and fun, but it almost felt like it was written by AI.
Even the character names, and Koontz always has fun with names, seemed like output from a ridiculous name generator. And Koontz’s dialogue is always rich, but this almost felt heavy-handed and nonsensical.
The different concepts - a craggle and a teacher injecting students with alien DNA - just seemed dropped out of nowhere, even for Koontz.

Cool idea, poor execution. There's zero emotion in Koontz 's writing. Everyone talks the same stilted speech and characters are indistinguishable from each other. Why does he insist on his MC calling the love of his life by her full name all the time? Super weird. DNF before we could even find out what was in the crate.
Great read!
Nice guys do finish last. I love that this book truly celebrates niceness. Now if only I had a Spike of my own.

slow-paced
A total delight
Having only read (and enjoyed!) a couple of Dean Koontz horrors/thrillers years ago in college, I didn't know if the playful winking prose in Bad Weather Friend was something new he was experimenting with or what. But I really thoroughly enjoyed it. A delightful read that had me smiling and even laughing out loud consistently throughout. Apparently his tone here is similar to the Odd Thomas books, which I may have to check out. But oh goodness, is it too much to hope for a sequel to this one? Because I genuinely love the characters, love the little family that develops by the end, and would love to follow them on more adventures in being nice in a not-so-nice world ❤️
