This book takes a while to get into. It is a weird mixture of Futuristic (and I mean futuristic not steampunk) and Victorian era, and I think that's why I had a hard time getting into it. It also starts off with acting like you already should know what's going on, instead of how most books walk you through it with the main character. So it was a little confusing the first 5 to 8 chapters. After you start connecting what's actually going on, it's easy to follow.

All the characters are using each other. Which I do find kind of interesting. To have a group of people working towards a goal, but all of them are using each other to get there. And each of them has a different reason they are using the others. Even though it's an interesting concept, it makes it so none of the characters are really likable.

Besides the characters been pretty crappy, the other thing that really bothered me about this book is the prison itself. Incarceron is supposed to be this Utopia-like place but at the same time a prison? And the words are interchangeable throughout the book. Like Claudia will talk about how it's supposed to be the perfect place one minute, then the next call it a prison. It's such a contradiction that has been bothering me from the very start.

But even though I had these issues, it ends very well and left off on a great cliffhanger to make me want to read the next one to find out what happens next. Even though I will read the next one, this probably will never be a story I recommend to others, just for what I started before, and how it's such an odd genre that I don't know anyone I could recommend it to.
