OK don't be fooled but despite being published by Hodder CHILDREN'S books I would say this book is not suitable for children! It is not excessively graphic or anything but within the first fifty pages there is a description of someone going insane that is quite unsettling and a moderate dose of body horror and such like whenever the prison is involved.

Incarceron is not what I expected but even better for it. Fisher not only created the steampunk-esque prison world I was expecting but also another whole world where people live in an idealised version of the distant past.

The mysteries and conflicts that drive the plot are also great - although in the middle section of the book dragged a little. The last 100 pages or so were amazing!! Everything came together in a way that balanced plot twists and the narrative integrity (although there is one twist I am a little confused about).

The main characters are very interesting and for a couple my opinions completely changed as they were developed. I especially enjoyed the relationship between Claudia and Jared which made me very invested in their plots succeeding.

Now I guess I need to get my hands on book 2!!
