I really took my time with this one. I really tried to like it.

The writing is beautiful, and each character is gripping, thoughtful and unique. But ultimately didn't enjoy this read. Maybe that was the point.

If I could I'll give it 6 stars.
Oh, how could I describe this book? It's so beautifully well written, it's so heart shattering, it's so painful, nostalgic, gorgeous. Just like art and poetry, just like life itself. It was like reading (long lasting) love letter, with all its hardships and happy years.

I loved the boys so much, all of the characters are so well constructed, so likeable (except for the Brothers, Caleb and Dr. Traylor ofc,  but even them were very realistic). My favourites by far have to be Willem and Harold, and the ones that I love in a complicated way are JB and Jude (oh, Judy). I do feel a lot for them. It was such an experience reading them grow, I loved it.

I do recommend the book a lot, just beware of the content warnings because it can be a lot.

Hanya’s writing is incredible, I have truly read very few books which compare. Everything felt so real and though you didn’t always agree with the characters I felt I really understood everything they did and why they did it. I found myself thinking - wow that’s so JB, or: of course Harold would say that!

I don’t think a single book has ever made me feel so many different things. I couldn’t stop thinking about the characters or the story and it took a few days to come to terms with what I had read. I think if I ever reread it I’ll stop before it all goes wrong. I want to remember them at their happiest.
