great book about writing and reading. interesting to learn to think from the writer’s perspective as a reader.
I’m not a writer. I might have enjoyed it more if I were
another banger. i really enjoyed this. you get to read some awesome short stories and then have them broken down in a variety of ways by saunders. he has really opened my eyes up to new ways of writing and finding my own style and voice. recommend this to anyone who’s interested in writing fiction
George Saunders talks about some of the masterful Russian short stories that he teaches in a writing class at Syracuse to discuss how fiction works.
“It really is true: doing what you please (i.e. what pleases you), with energy, will lead you to everything—to your particular obsessions and the ways in which you’ll indulge them, to your particular challenges and the forms in which they’ll convert into beauty, to your particular obstructions and your highly individualized obstruction breakers.”
I loved this book.
I loved this book.
If you are a writer, love analyzing literature, love the Russian masters or just love great writing, you will enjoy this book. Saunders book, inspired by his Russian literature class at Syracuse, gives us short stores from Chekhov, Turgenev, Tolstoy and Gogol. He then analyzes each short story; one page by page. It is not a dry collegiate analysis. Saunders is insightful as well as entertaining. I highly recommend this book for just about everyone.
