Funny and emosh and loveable x 10 million

I'd heard a lot about Beach Read from friends and fellow bookstagrammers, so went into it with medium-high expectations. It delivered in several different ways, including:

- Laugh out loud moments
- A weird yet surprisingly emotional storyline, armed with local cults and emotional familial betrayal
- A good level of spice
- Loveable characters that you'll still think about years later

For me, January was definitely a more relatable and enjoyable character to get to know. Gus had his moments, and I really enjoyed the ending - but this book very much felt like an exploration into January's mind and grief more than your typical romance book.

I'd definitely recommend, and will no doubt read again one summer in the future!

I truly loved this book so much. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. It definitely lives up to the hype. I don’t have any words for how much I love this one. Gus and January are everything. They felt so real. My favourite thing about this book wasn’t even the romance. Which I did love. But how complicated the characters were. They weren’t black and white. There was so much complicity going on. With January’s grief and Gus’s childhood. It was so beautifully written. I just can’t wrap my mind around this story. I love it so much.

Emily Henry absolutely pulled at my heartstrings and left me in a happy puddle of tears as big as Lake Michigan. The way each main character challenges the familial trends in relationships that they are convinced will continue to be upheld by them but also want to write a different story, it is truly something to be admired.

An excellent piece of writing and definitely worthy of a five star rating. Romance is not dead and Emily Henry is the doctor ensuring it remains alive and well, even if just to provide a “happy-for-now”.

I love books that make me sit with my own sadness while also having me totally engrossed in the romance. I read a lot of romance and sometimes, after a while, I start to feel like Gus at the beginning of the book. Like love and happy endings are only possible in books. January and Gus feel like they could be real people who
fall in love
. Life can be messy and lovely at the same time and books that can show that duality without seeming unreal are gems to be shared. I don’t think I’ll stop sharing Beach Read for a while.

Also, I listened to the audiobook version and I think the narrator did a wonderful job. Sometimes audiobook narrations can be really distracting from the story and kind of ruin a scene, chapter, or even the whole story. But if you’re like me and you like to feel totally enveloped by an audiobook I don’t think you’ll be disappointed by this one. Several times I found myself startled away from the story when the outside world got too loud and realized I’d been listening for hours. I still managed to finish Beach Read over 24 hours though so it’s safe to say the audiobook is pretty good.
